Section: Hardware & wiring
Applies to: RedSpy
Goal:
Power the RedSpy camera correctly and establish a stable connection to the Main Unit.
When you need this:
RedSpy camera does not turn on
No connection between camera and Main Unit
Unsure which cable or port to use
Prerequisites:
RedSpy Main Unit
RedSpy camera
PoE-capable switch or PoE injector
Ethernet cable (Cat6 or better)
Steps:
Connect the Ethernet cable from the RS CAM port on the Main Unit to the CAM port on the RedSpy camera.
Ensure the connection provides Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Verify the PoE device supports 802.3at (PoE+) or 802.3bt (PoE++).
Power on the Main Unit.
Keep the camera stationary during startup until initialization completes.
Expected result:
Camera powers on
Status indicators show normal operation
Camera appears as connected in the RedSpy interface
Common issues / fixes:
Camera does not power on → verify PoE standard
Intermittent connection → use higher-quality or shorter Ethernet cable
No detection → confirm correct port (RS CAM, not EXT LAN)
Escalate to support if:
Camera does not power on with confirmed PoE
Ports appear damaged or non-functional
